Avoid Duplicate Image Downloads — Bulk Image Downloader Pro
Duplicate images waste download time, disk space, and review time. If you want to avoid duplicate image downloads, the first step is understanding what kind of duplicate you are dealing with.
Bulk Image Downloader Pro has two useful layers: exact duplicate URL cleanup inside tasks, and perceptual duplicate finding for images that look the same even when their URLs differ.
Start with exact duplicate URLs
The simplest duplicate is the same URL appearing more than once in a task. This can happen after merging scans, pasting lists from several sources, importing CSV rows, or collecting images from paginated galleries.
The Strip Duplicates action trims lines, compares the URL text, keeps the first occurrence, and removes repeated URL entries from the task. It is a practical first pass before any download begins.
Export duplicate URLs before cleanup
When duplicates are detected, the extension can show duplicate warnings and make duplicate URLs available for download. Keeping that duplicate list can be useful if you want a record of what was removed or need to audit a messy source list later.
For important jobs, save the task or export tasks before making destructive cleanup changes.
Understand what exact URL dedupe will not catch
Exact URL cleanup only catches repeated URL strings after trimming. It will not catch every tracking-parameter variation, CDN rewrite, resized copy, or visually identical image served from a different address.
That is why exact dedupe should be treated as the first cleanup step, not the whole duplicate strategy.
Use the duplicate finder for visual repeats
The Perceptual Duplicate Finder compares image appearance rather than only URL text. It can group images that look alike and give you controls for sensitivity, keep rules, sorting, selection, export, and removal from task URL lists.
Start with a balanced sensitivity setting and review results before removing anything. For borderline sets, use manual selection so similar but meaningfully different images are not removed by mistake.
Use keep rules carefully
Keep rules help decide which copy should remain. Depending on the job, you may prefer the largest image, the first detected image, the shortest URL, or manual selection. Pick one rule and apply it consistently within the task.
For product images, keeping the largest version often makes sense. For ordered research lists, keeping the first detected version may be better.
A clean duplicate-control workflow
- Save or export the task before major cleanup.
- Use Strip Duplicates to remove exact repeated URLs.
- Preview the remaining set for obvious thumbnail/full-size clutter.
- Run the Perceptual Duplicate Finder for visual repeats.
- Use manual review for borderline duplicate groups.
- Export duplicate URLs or task CSVs when you need a rollback record.
